How CrossFit has Changed my Life… When I found CrossFit just after my 21st birthday, I had suffered with weight fluctuations. I went from being 6% body fat and 116 lbs. at 5’7″, where I obsessively went to spin classes and counted my calories. After a vertebrae injury, I decided I needed to build muscle in not only my back but throughout my body. I sought out a personal trainer who competed locally in CrossFit. He took me to a local competition where I saw girls doing pull ups, rope climbs, and muscle ups… things I was content with knowing I would never be able to do. But I was amazed. 6 months from that date I got my first pull up and the happiness and power that I felt led me to join a CrossFit gym and, months later, obtain my Level 1 Certification to better myself as an athlete. It was only 6 months after that where I realized I was meant to coach other people. Without CrossFit I would never know what the human body and mind is truly capable of. I would still suffer from body image issues, anxiety, and lack of sleep. Coaching Background In my youth I grew up traveling the country playing competitive soccer until my college years. In high school, I had the opportunity to be the Head Student Athletic Trainer for the Football, Soccer, Wrestling, Basketball, and Volleyball programs at San Ramon Valley High School. I attended multiple seminars and went to school at CSU Fullerton for Kinesiology. I later went to San Francisco State studying Communications where I worked with the Sports Department at KTVU Channel 2 News. I have been participating and competing in the sport of CrossFit for 5 years now and have been just over 3 years and it has changed my life. In that time, I worked full time behind a desk and after 4 years there, I decided I needed to be in an occupation where my voice made more of a difference. I decided to pursue coaching CrossFit full time and I can truly say that this isn’t a job for me anymore. People say that when you find what you love to do, you will never work another day in your life. I never believed that until now. I go to bed on Sunday nights excited for my 4:15 am alarm to go off to come make a difference in your lives in any way that I can. I have coached well over 1,250 hours in my 3 years coaching and I look forward to furthering my knowledge in CrossFit, Weightlifting, and Gymnastics. I look forward to spending our 1 hour a day together bettering technique, mapping out the path to your own success, and giving you the best hour of your day. Yes, I have a Life out of the Gym. When I am not working out or coaching athletes, I spend time with my boyfriend, Greg, and our yellow lab puppy, Balboa. We like to go fishing at Del Valle, hunting in Chico, and golfing around the area on a Sunday. I have a passion for cooking – and I must say… I am pretty good at it (thanks Dad), planning weddings and corporate events, finding the best donut bakeries, and visiting my family in Laguna Beach.
CROSSFIT / MOBILITY COACH
I’m Nick Kao, I’m an Army veteran and currently pursuing a degree in math at UC Berkeley. Ever since I joined the military I’ve been a firm believer in a healthy mind and a healthy body and eventually I was put in charge of my unit’s PRT (Physical Readiness Training) Program where I helped soldiers maintain their physical standards. After the military, I reentered college and was introduced to CrossFit. Originally I majored in math and kinesiology as I wanted to incorporate health and wellness with solid data and mathematical models. I eventually got my Level 1 certification in CrossFit and I’m working towards an NASM certification on my spare time from college. I’m particularly interested in mobility and rehab. I like working with others to restore range of motion and improve body mechanics.

Mariana was born in Lake Tahoe CA, and grew up in Nevada. Being physically active outdoors has been part of her life from a young age. The Tahoe lifestyle exposed her to biking, swimming, snowboarding, hiking, and running outside. Mariana also grew up playing competitive soccer and tennis but fell off the fitness track when she began college at the University of Nevada Reno, in 2008. Lost, overweight and uninterested in her original major Mariana dropped out and perused a career in retail management. In 2012 Mariana set out and accomplished a goal of losing 50 pounds and running 13 half marathons in 13 months, along with, completing her first ever full marathon. In 2014 she was introduced and immediately hooked on CrossFit ultimately competing at the local level and becoming CrossFit level-1 certified. Her new-found passion for fitness and helping others drove Mariana to step down from her career position to pursue a new career in fitness. Very shortly after Mariana’s health took a hit when she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, Systemic Lupus. Mariana pushed through and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from California State University, Chico in 2017. During her time in College Mariana focused on the science behind how exercise heals the body, nutrition and physical therapy. Mariana fell in love with coaching and inspiring others to fall in love with fitness. She has struggled with major weight loss, and health issues but overcame those by studying and focusing on the healing effects that exercise has on the body. Through CrossFit Pleasanton, Mariana hopes to provide our members and community with an inspiring and powerful environment to help them learn, grow mentally, heal physically, and achieve their goals while maintaining balance.
